Alcohol
Alcohol is everywhere and it is arguably amongst the most damaging drugs that people use every day around the world. Problematic drinking is made worse by it being so sociably acceptable as such, freely available, people are virtually expected to drink alcohol in most social situations. Of course, not everyone who drinks alcohol on a regular basis is an alcoholic or will develop an alcohol addiction, many people can easily control their intake without even thinking about it and even if they over do it from time to time, however, if a person is an addict then it can and will eventually take hold of and destroy their lives and the lives of those closest to them. Long term alcohol use is one of the most solidly ingrained addictions as it could have developed over a long period of time and could well have been growing for decades. Because of this, it usually needs to be managed carefully with truly effective alcohol treatment at an alcohol rehab that provides a full medical detox service. Long term sobriety really requires a solid foundation, if you don't start off with the right support then it can easily go wrong.

Alcohol Addiction
One of the most common, unnoticed and devastating amongst all of the addictions is alcoholism (i.e. alcohol addiction). Alcohol Addiction is a very complex thing and is often combined with other existing addictions, process addictions or mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Of course, not everyone who consumes alcohol, even in relatively large quantities, is an alcoholic, but if you find yourself or somebody close to you begin and then uncontrollably use alcohol on a regular basis, be aware that there may well be a serious problem present. In my experience, if you think that you or someone else has a problem with alcohol it is usually proven to be the case, as the addict or people close are often the last to realise and come to terms with it. Long term alcohol misuse results in increased tolerance as well as physical dependence. Alcohol misuse can have disastrous health and social affects to the consumer and these include:
Social stigma can really hamper any attempt at intervention, diagnosis and treatment, but it is a serious addiction and the effects are often fatal so action must be taken as it doesn't improve if left alone, it only gets worse. The big difference that drinking has over other substances, aside from it being legal, socially acceptable and also freely available, is that a serious addiction to it can manifest and grow over decades. The decline is often so slow that it is very difficult to identify just when it became a problem. This is especially dangerous as denial is strong in people who drink regularly and those for whom it has become a way of life. It is often only when they have stopped for a good period of time that they can objectively look back and see the extent of the problems it was causing throughout their lives. |

About CapeRecovery
''In my experience, drinking became a way of life from an early age, at first it was the normal thing to do, it was what everyone else of my age was doing, I didn't seem to be drinking any more or less than anyone else. The difference was that when they stopped that lifestyle and moved onto other things like marriage, having children and starting careers, these things took priority and they carried on with their lives. Drinking was always my priority and over the space of 20 years it cost me everything I had and destroyed the person I wanted to be.'' |
I drank for approximately 25 years before I reached desperation and sought help through an alcohol rehab, in an attempt at getting sober. Alcohol took away all that I had worked for over time and I do wish that I'd found the solution earlier, however I would not change it at all now as my life is great and I've learnt so much from my personal rehab and recovery process.
If you are interested in hearing more about my struggles with addiction, check out my Addiction Blog. During my addiction years, I drank daily for over 15 years and I discovered that daily drinking over a long period of time will certainly require a degree of medical support when detoxing as the risks are high. All our rehab centres provide the best in medical detox prior to the extended rehabilitation period. This is always fully included in the cost for the first month of treatment.
