Extended Care (Continued Care) Rehab Aftercare.
Where do you go after rehab?
The question of where a person should go after detox and primary rehab comes up a lot at CapeRecovery. Many rehabs do offer rehab aftercare when the person leaves but only one session, once a week and attendance tends to be quite low, obviously the individuals motivation is the most important factor here but to me this simply isn't adequate support. My view from my own personal experience as a nurse and counsellor in the addiction field in the UK and also from personal experience of a crippling 25 year addiction to alcohol and other drugs, is that the addiction usually took a substantial length of time to reach crisis point, so a full recovery simply is not feasible in a period of 21 days or a month. Whenever it is possible, and this actually saves money in the long-run, my opinion is that some sort of extended care or continued care is vitally important. We often find people coming to us for some true and impartial advice about the next step of their own, or a loved ones, recovery journey. There is a worrying tendency at the moment, as medical aid only recognises and pays for primary rehab treatment or even just the short detox period, for most clients to leave without any proper guidance or follow up. Again, in my opinion, this is simply setting people up to fail and is not helpful when looking at recovery as a lifelong thing. This is of course, an advantage to the many primary rehab centres as they get repeat custom from people re-lapsing and returning for another months stint but doesn’t seem at all ethical to me as it is putting lives at risk. Repeated trips to rehab have become, unfortunately, a common occurrence, however the chance of this can easily be lessoned by putting a proper follow up plan in place and continuing the journey with a period at a good quality secondary rehab, tertiary rehab or a stay in a fully supported sober living accommodation. Even if this is not financially possible, as is often the case, we can always at the very least, advise on meetings to attend and things to do in order to keep working on the persons recovery and to help prevent relapse. We are also working hard to make sober living more affordable and always seeking funding for sponsored and part-sponsored beds in our remarkable sober living homes. We only work with the best options for all types of extended care (continued care), treating any addiction, process addiction, dual-diagnosis issue or eating disorder.
What makes us unique is that we cut through all the nonsense and aren't afraid to say it how it is. We place people only based on what treatment is best for them and will give them the highest possible chance of a sustained recovery and we only work with the best secondary rehab, tertiary rehab and sober living accommodation available here in Cape Town. The environment and the quality of care given are the only things that are important to us when we are choosing who we work alongside. It not only makes us unique, it also ensures that we can always guarantee the best quality treatment available, promote good practice and eliminate bad practice. This intimate and selective way of partnering with places means that we can stay fully involved and see all of our clients throughout the whole of the rehabilitation process and beyond, that’s just the CapeRecovery way! When our clients are safely settled in their chosen extended care or continued care accommodation, we then work with them, their counsellors and support staff and we also support the families back home, keeping them fully informed on the clients progress. We also make introductions to the vibrant Cape Town Recovery Community, including many social events and even volunteering opportunities or providing help with finding work. Overseas clients can check out all of our 'CapeRecovery Experiences' which we tailor especially for the needs of the individual client.
We have full packages of continued care and extended care following Primary Rehab and we assess an individuals level of care needed prior to choosing an appropriate Secondary Rehab, Tertiary Rehab or Supported Sober Living Environment here in Cape Town. Each place we work with has different specialities so we have all addictions (drugs and alcohol), behavioural addictions (Gaming, Sex, Porn, Love, Gambling, etc.), dual-diagnosis issues (including depression) and eating disorders fully covered with an unrivalled level of support and care in recovery. Every single client is assessed and the most appropriate route for them is always the suggested one, without bias.
